Dream Team
Dream Team refers to the U.S. national basketball team that competed in the 1992 Olympics in Barcelona. It was the first U.S. team to feature star players from the NBA, including Michael Jordan, Magic Johnson, Larry Bird and Charles Barkley. The Dream Team easily beat most of their competition – the closest game being a 32–point victory in the final against Croatia – and captured the gold medal.
The Dream Team’s highly entertaining style of play and dominant performance led to a sharp increase in fan-following for the NBA and a boom for basketball worldwide. Subsequent U.S. national teams (successively called Dream Team II, III) remained unbeaten for ten years but were unable to duplicate the popularity of the original Dream Team. Other national teams have improved so much that since the 2000 Olympic Games in Sydney, the U.S. has not won gold in a single major tournament, including an embarrassing sixth-place finish in the 2002 World Championships in Indianapolis.
