Adu lived in Africa until the age of eight, when his family resettled to the USA as his mother was given a "Greencard". He became an US citizen in 2003.

Being only 14 years old, Adu had arrived on such a high level, both technically and physically, that he became the youngest player ever to sign a major league pro contract in any team sport in 2004.
D.C. United chose him as the number one overall pick in that year’s MLS SuperDraft. Adu won the MLS Cup title with them immediately in his first pro season.
