Free throw
A Free throw is a Basketball term in which a player is allowed to shoot from a restricted area without intervention by the other team. This opportunity arises most commonly when a foul occurs on the side of the opposing team. If the foul is such that it causes the player to miss the shot, more than one free throw may be awarded. They are worth one point and only when successful. If the player still makes the shot, it's known as a 3 or 4 point play, in which case the number of free throws is reduced to one, but the player's previous shot still counts.
Free throws are also awarded when a team commits a certain number of fouls. Regardless of who is shooting, two free throws are automatically awarded to the other team. An exception to the rule is when the offensive team is shooting; then it's treated as a normal foul.
