He began his career at HSC Montpellier in 1994 before moving to Paris Saint-Germain after five years. He scored six goals in a UEFA Champions League match against Rosenborg Trondheim (7:2) in 2000. Robert transferred to Newcastle United in 2001 for a fee of £9.5 million.


In 2005, the Frenchman moved to FC Portsmouth as a temporary loan. The next year, he played for S.L. Benfica (Portugal) before transferring to Spanish club Levante UD where he played from 2006 to 2007. Robert returned to England in 2008, playing only four games for Derby County and moving to Toronto FC then. He made his debut on April 5, 2008, against D.C. United, scoring his first goal for Toronto on a free kick on April 19 versus Real Salt Lake.


Robert is a former French international, having played for his country between 1999 and 2001.
