MVP
MVP stands for Most Valuable Player and is an award given to the player that is deemed to have had the most outstanding season.
In the NBA, a large pool of sportswriters gets to vote for their choices at the end of the regular season. In earlier years, the players themselves chose one of their peers as MVP.
Winning an MVP award is the highest individual honour an NBA player can attain and is an almost certain ticket to the Hall of Fame.
The record-holder for most MVP awards is Kareem Abdul-Jabbar with six trophies. In 2007, Dirk Nowitzki of Germany became the first European player to win the award.
This season, the frontrunners for MVP are the Cleveland Cavaliers' LeBron James, the Los Angeles Lakers' Kobe Bryant and the New Orleans Hornets' Chris Paul.
