[edit] Junior World Champion

She started skiing at the age of three and won her first title at the 2001 Junior World Championships combined event in Verbier (Switzerland).

One year later, Riesch became Juniors Super G World Champion in Tarvisio (Slovenia).

In French Serre Chevalier, she secured the combined title again in 2003 before winning two titles in 2004 when she finished first in downhill and giant slalom in Slovenian Maribor.

[edit] World Cup and injuries

Until today, Maria Riesch won 10 World Cup titles.

Especially in 2004 and 2005, Riesch had to face massive injury worries. In the beginning of the 2004/2005 season, she broke her shoulder. In January 2005, she suffered from a cruciate ligament rupture in her right knee, followed by a tibial plateau injury in September and a broken metacarpal (bone) in October 2005. In December 2005, Riesch suffered from a cruciate ligament rupture in her left knee.

The German came back at the first 2006/2007 season downhill event in Lake Louise (Canada). Riesch finally established herself among the world’s best skiers from 2007/2008 on.

@Tennisfan:
Congrats to Lindsay for her win today - but I'm happy Maria finished 2nd in Garmisch-Partenkirchen:-).

I hope I'll find some time to write an entry about L. Vonn next week.

Thanks for this article! Maria is doing a gorgeous job recently - although I like Lindsay Vonn a bit more.
