A Lot of Complaining Gets You . . .

A lot of raised eyebrows

Memphis is the underdog in all this, coach John Calipari wants you to know, and some of you might find this hard to believe, but they’re still going to be playing after this weekend. Calipari would like you to believe that he’s blowing more than hot air, and is probably giving himself a good pat on the back right now thinking he pulled it off. But with a 22 point victory over Michigan State, this underdog story really isn’t flying anymore. Especially since this is the third time Memphis has consecutively reached the Elite Eight.

But when pressed on it, Calipari did a little backtracking. “It’s not what I said,” he whined. “Everybody picked us to lose. We were the upset special . . . We were going to get out-played, out-coached . . . “ and blah, blah, blah. We don’t need ten minutes of explanation on all the ways people are going to out-perform you, Calipari. And also not many people are buying this underdog story anymore. Especially when you go into the 2nd half with a 20 point lead and are the southern number 1 seed (let's not even mention the awards, championships, and number 1 spots they've been in.) Most underdogs fall in the double-digit category with less-than-stellar records and are lucky to even be alive at the end of a game, but not a single one of them has ever entered into the tournament in a first place seed. I thnk Calipari is confusing the word "underdog" with "top dog". But what does the Michigan coach think about it?

“They played well, and we played bad,” he sighed in defeat. “That’s an ugly combination. We just weren’t very sharp early.” Well, I guess that about sums it all up. It’s hard for even me to be sarcastic to someone who’s being so brutally honest.

But my point is, if Calipari wants respect, he should just keep his mouth shut and let the scores speak for themselves. That works better than anything else.
