Alicia Molik calls it a career

Australian former Top 10-player Alicia Molik announced her retirement from professional tennis yesterday.

Molik reached a career high of World No. 8 in singles and World No. 6 in doubles, both in 2005.
After suffering from an inner ear infection in the same year, she worked on returning to the WTA Tour for almost two years overall. After coming back, the Australian won her second Grand Slam doubles title at Roland Garros, teaming up with Mara Santangelo from Italy. She had reached the first one in front of her homecrowd at the Australian Open in Melbourne in 2005, where she played together with Russia's Svetlana Kuznetsova.

Besides a total of seven doubles titles on the WTA Tour, Molik celebrated five singles wins: Hobart (2003), Stockholm, Zurich, Luxembourg (2004) and Sydney (2005).

The Australian, who turned pro in 1996, played her last tournament this summer at the Beijing Olympics and lost to Maria Jose Sanchez Lorenzo from Spain in Round 1.
Molik had represented her country already before, both at the 2000 and 2004 Olympic Games. In singels, she won the bronze medal in Athens.

Thanks for all the wonderful tennis you showed us, Alicia!
