Michael Beasley Going to the Big House
No, not jail, silly. The NBA
There had been rumors for a long time that it would happen, and now comes the moment when Michael Beasley has a very serious decision to make. Though he's only been playing for Kansas State one season, the star of KSU has until 6 PM tonight EST to decide whether or not to add his name to the NBA draft on June 26th. And though he's considered to be a top pick, it's not an easy one for Beasley, and he's brought in friends, family members, and coaches to help him make his decision of either college or a ton of money, fame, and a professional career out of playing sports. Sounds like a hard one to me.
But Beasley is a top pick for a reason. He helped lead the Wildcats to their first NCAA appearance in 20 years by being second in most rebounds and third in most points of any freshman in NCAA history, not an easy feat. And Kansas coach Bill Self has nothing but good things to say about his 6'10 forward. "There's no question in my mind who the best player in the country is,"he gushed. "It's Michael Beasley. He may not win all the player of the year awards, but he's the best player."
I hope none of Beasley's teammates have jealousy issues . . .
But Beasley says he never put basketball first in his life. “I don't want to be an athletic student," he said. "I want to be a student-athlete.”
I have to say, I don't know of any student-athletes in the NBA. But, regardless, I say go for it, Michael. Education can always be furthered through a variety of ways, but how often does the NBA come and knock on your door? That's better than Santa! If he, you know, knocked on doors instead of coming down the chimney . . .
