Pierce leads Boston into the NBA finals

The Boston Celtics have reached the NBA finals for the first time since 1987. The Celtics defeated the Detroit Pistons 89-81 on Friday to win the Eastern Conference final play-off series 4-2.

Paul Pierce was the player to decide the match, scoring 27 points, twelve of these in the last quarter, when the Pistons were up 70-60 already.

Due to that defeat, the Michigan team failed to reach the NBA finals for the third successive time: In 2006, the Miami Heat stopped the Pistons in the Conference finals, while the Cleveland Cavaliers beat Detroit last year.

On the other hand, the players from Boston could hardly believe their luck, making one of the largest comebacks in NBA history. In the 2006/2007 season, the Massachusetts-based club had only won 24 of their 82 games, finishing next to the last.
Signing Ray Allen and Kevin Garnett in the summer of 2007 turned the tide for the Celtics.

Boston faces the L.A. Lakers in the finals now. The first match will be played on Thursday, June 5, 9.P.M. at TD Banknorth Garden.
