US Open, Round 1 – Good start for US players
The US stars made a good start to their home Grand Slam in 2008.
Sam Querrey surprised by ousting Czech 22nd seed Tomas Berdych in three straight sets, while Lindsay Davenport, 23rd seed, won against Aleksandra Wozniak (Canada). Both Venus and Serena Williams reached Round 2, defeating Kateryna Bondarenko resp. Samantha Stosur in two sets. 9th seeded James Blake needed five sets to beat compatriot Donald Young.
Other seeds in the men’s event to lose besides Berdych were Richard Gasquet from France (12) against German Tommy Haas, Haas’ compatriot Nicolas Kiefer (20) against Ivo Minar (Croatia), Felicianio Lopez (Spain, 27) against Jürgen Melzer from Austria and Juan Monaco (Argentina, 29) against Japanese Kei Nishikori.
10th seed Russian Anna Chakvetadze lost to compatriot Ekaterina Makarova in the women’s event, as did Daniela Hantuchova (Slovakia, 11) to German Anna-Lena Grönefeld, Maria Kirilenko (Russia, 22) to Tamira Paszek from Austria, Shahar Peer (Israel, 24) to Chinese Na Li and Virginie Razzano (France, 31) to Timea Bacsinszky (Switzerland).
Among the matches on Wednesday will be the Round 1-clash Andy Roddick (USA) vs. Fabrice Santoro (FRA).
