USLTA
The USLTA (United States Lawn Tennis Association) was first the national governing body for tennis in the USA. It is now known as the USTA (United States Tennis Association). It was created to standardize rules and regulations and to promote and develop the growth of tennis in the USA.
The USLTA war formed by a small group of tennis club members in 1881 and started to host National Championships in Newport, RI. In 1886, Canadian and other foreign players sent entries to these tournaments for the first time. Women players were officially recognized in 1889. In 1913, they were ranked for the first time. In 1892, the first Mixed Doubles Championships took place. In 1910, the National Clay Court Championships were founded. In 1915, the Championships moved to New York. Seeding was established in sanctioned tournaments in 1922. USLTA joined the International Lawn Tennis Federation (ILTF) in the same year.
